Introduction
In 2027 we will commemorate one of the greatest composers of all time: Ludwig van Beethoven (200 years since his passing).
It is due to a mixture of personal tragedy and creative power, as well as the obvious artistic quality of his music, that Beethoven and his legacy became such a supreme point of reference for future generations. A long-cherished wish of mine was to record and perform all of his 32 Piano Sonatas. In all their diversity these masterpieces require an impressive technical mastery of the piano and an intense musicality. Hans von Bülow, the first to play all 32 in a series of recitals, likened Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” to the Old Testament and Beethoven’s Sonatas to the New.
So, a couple of years ago I started this challenging project, a kind of musical journey. The order of recording of the Sonatas is not fixed. When I feel I am ready for a particular Sonata, like the ‘Hammerklavier’, I just start!
This site will be regularly updated with explanatory notes and short recorded fragments for each Sonata. Explanatory notes in the digital booklet are provided by Annediek van Velden.
