SONATA in G major, Op. 49 No. 2

Sonata no 20, opus 49 no 2 in G major is a beautiful, typically classical work in two movements, Allegro, ma non troppo and Tempo di Menuetto, both in G major. Written in 1796-1797, it was only published several years later. Like the opus 49 no 1 sonata, this sonata is relatively easy and suitable as teaching material to get to know the classical style. A predictable and modest, yet playful and highly ingenious work, though Beethoven did not take the trouble to indicate articulation and dynamics. In the first movement there is no indication at all, in the second movement Beethoven indicates pianissimo twice, which provides pianists with a certain liberty. Many pianists choose the same dynamics, but differ in the articulation of the left hand of the minuet. Some prefer legato, some staccato. The second movement is a slow movement and rondo in one. Beethoven used the minuet theme of the second movement again in the famous Septet in E-flat major, opus 20.
